Can Christ return at any moment, or must other events happen first (Titus 2:13, Matthew 24:42-44, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3)?

Contested

Texts of equal or higher authority genuinely pull both ways, and SAM names both sides.

The texts genuinely pull in two directions: Jesus' own words say certain events precede the visible coming AND that the exact timing is unknown to all but the Father, while Paul states two specific events must happen "first." The question of whether Christ can return at any moment without prior signs is CONTESTED within the text itself.

Jesus' own words in Matthew 24 list events that precede his coming (abomination of desolation, great tribulation, cosmic signs) and then say "no one knows the day or hour", both in the same discourse. Paul in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 says the rebellion and the man of lawlessness must come "first." These texts pull in different directions on whether the return is sign-preceded or could arrive at any moment, and the text does not resolve which framing governs.

The unresolved tension: The text does not resolve whether the signs in Matthew 24:4–31 are sequential prerequisites that must be completed before the return, or whether they describe events that accompany and surround the return such that the exact moment remains genuinely unknown even while signs are visible. This is the unresolved tension at the heart of the question.
