Leviticus 3: The peace offering

What happens?
Yahweh gives the rules for the peace offering, which can be from the herd, a lamb, or a goat, male or female, with no defect. The person lays his hand on its head and kills it, and the priests sprinkle the blood on the altar. The fat around the insides, the kidneys and the covering of the liver is burned for Yahweh, and the Israelites are never to eat fat or blood.
Who is speaking?
Yahweh's speech to Moses from chapter 1 goes on and ends in verse 17. God's own words are in 17 of the 17 verses: all of them. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks
1“‘If his offering is a sacrifice of peace offerings, if he offers it from the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without defect before Yahweh.God speaks
In plain English: 'If his offering is a sacrifice of peace offerings (or: fellowship offerings), and he brings it from the herd, male or female, he is to offer one with no defect before Yahweh.
The Hebrew word: "Peace offerings" is shelamim, which sounds like shalom, peace. The dictionary gives it as "properly, requital, i.e. a (voluntary) sacrifice in thanks".
How it is translated: This Bible says "peace" in all 84 verses that use the word. Other Bibles say "fellowship offering" or "sacrifice of well-being".
What changes: Read as a "thanks" or "well-being" offering, the name speaks of the giver's thanks and welfare, not of making peace. In this offering the fat is burned for Yahweh, and the meat is eaten ( to ), with the breast and the right thigh given to the priests ( to ).
