Leviticus 2: The meal offering

A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study

What happens?

Yahweh gives the rules for the meal offering, made of fine flour with oil and frankincense, raw or baked in an oven, on a griddle or in a pan. The priest burns a handful on the altar as the memorial portion, and the rest belongs to Aaron and his sons. No yeast or honey may be burned, every offering is to have salt, and first fruits of grain are roasted and crushed.

Who is speaking?

Yahweh's speech to Moses from chapter 1 goes on through this whole chapter. God's own words are in 16 of the 16 verses: all of them. The speech carries on into chapter 3. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

1“‘When anyone offers an offering of a meal offering to Yahweh, his offering shall be of fine flour. He shall pour oil on it, and put frankincense on it.God speaks

In plain English: 'When anyone brings a meal offering (or: a grain offering, a gift) to Yahweh, his offering is to be of fine flour. He is to pour oil on it and put frankincense on it.

The Hebrew word: "Meal offering" is minchah. The dictionary gives it as "a donation", and as an offering that is "usually bloodless and voluntary".

How it is translated: In Leviticus this Bible says "meal" in all 33 verses that use minchah. In the whole Bible it says "present" in 16 of its 194 verses and "tribute" in 17, as when Jacob sends "a present" to Esau in .

What changes: Read as "gift", the name says the offering is a present to Yahweh, not what it is made of. In and the same word is used for the offerings of both Cain and Abel, and Abel's came from his flock.

2He shall bring it to Aaron’s sons, the priests. He shall take his handful of its fine flour, and of its oil, with all its frankincense, and the priest shall burn its memorial on the altar, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.God speaks

In plain English: He is to bring it to Aaron's sons, the priests. He is to take a handful of its fine flour and its oil, with all its frankincense, and the priest is to burn it on the altar as its memorial portion, an offering made by fire, a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.

The Hebrew word: "Memorial" is azkarah, which the dictionary gives as "a reminder; specifically remembrance-offering".

How it is translated: This Bible says "memorial" in all 7 verses of the Bible that use the word, 6 of them in Leviticus. Some other Bibles say "token portion".

What changes: Read as "reminder", the handful burned on the altar is a reminder before Yahweh. Read as "token portion", the small part burned stands for the whole offering. The text does not say which.
