A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
The book opens with a list of names. It runs from Adam through Noah and his three sons, then follows the sons of Japheth, Ham and Shem, down to Abraham. It gives the sons of Abraham: Ishmael, the sons of Keturah, and Isaac. Isaac's sons are Esau and Israel, and the chapter ends with the sons of Esau, the sons of Seir, and the kings and chiefs of Edom.
Who is speaking?
The narrator gives the list. No one speaks in this chapter, and no verse is in gold. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

19To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.
In plain English: Two sons were born to Eber. The name of one was Peleg, because in his days the earth (or: the land) was divided. His brother's name was Joktan.
The Hebrew word: Peleg is peleg. The reason the text gives is that "in his days the earth was divided", and the Hebrew word for "was divided", nifleg, comes from palag, which the dictionary gives as "to split (literally or figuratively)". The word for "earth" is erets, which can also mean "land". The same line is in .
What changes: Read as "the earth", the whole earth was divided in his days. Read as "the land", a land was divided. The text says only that it happened in his days, and does not say how.
