1 Chronicles 7: Issachar, Benjamin, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim and Asher
A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
The list of Israel's sons goes on with Issachar, Benjamin, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim and Asher. For Issachar, Benjamin and Asher it gives the numbers of men listed for war. For Ephraim it says that men of Gath killed two of his descendants, that Ephraim mourned many days, and that he named a son Beriah because there was trouble with his house.
Who is speaking?
The narrator gives the list. No one speaks in this chapter, and no verse is in gold. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks
1Of the sons of Issachar: Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron, four.

12So were Shuppim, Huppim, the sons of Ir, Hushim, and the sons of Aher.
In plain English: So were Shuppim and Huppim, the sons of Ir, and Hushim, the sons of Aher (or, as this Bible has it: Shuppim, Huppim, the sons of Ir, Hushim, and the sons of Aher).
Good to know: In the Hebrew there is no "and" before "the sons of Ir", before "Hushim" or before "the sons of Aher". So the names can be read in pairs: Shuppim and Huppim as the sons of Ir, and Hushim as the sons of Aher. Or they can be read as separate entries, as this Bible has it. The verse gives no more.

In plain English: The sons of Naphtali were Jahziel, Guni, Jezer, Shallum, and the sons of Bilhah (or: Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shallum, the sons of Bilhah).
Good to know: In the Hebrew there is no "and" before "the sons of Bilhah". So it can name Bilhah's sons as a further group after the four, as this Bible has it, or say that the four named were the sons of Bilhah. The verse gives no more.

15Machir took a wife of Huppim and Shuppim, whose sister’s name was Maacah. The name of the second was Zelophehad; and Zelophehad had daughters.
In plain English: Machir took a wife of (or: for) Huppim and Shuppim. The name of his sister was Maacah (or, as this Bible has it: whose sister's name was Maacah). The name of the second was Zelophehad, and Zelophehad had daughters.
Good to know: The Hebrew leaves three things open. The small word before "Huppim" and before "Shuppim" is the one that usually means "for" or "to", so the verse can read "took a wife for Huppim and for Shuppim" as well as "took a wife of them". "His sister" does not say whose sister: Machir's, or one of the two named. And "the second" does not say second of what. The verse gives no more.

23He went in to his wife, and she conceived and bore a son, and he named him Beriah, because there was trouble with his house.
In plain English: He went in to his wife, and she conceived and bore a son. He named him Beriah, because there was trouble (or: evil) with his house.
The Hebrew words: The text gives the reason for the name. "Beriah" is beri'ah, and "trouble" is ra'ah, which the dictionary gives under ra as "bad or ... evil (natural or moral)". The two words sound alike. Read as "trouble", the house was in distress; read as "evil", something bad had happened in it. The verse does not say what.
