1 Chronicles 6: Levi's line, the singers, and the Levite cities

A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study

What happens?

The chapter lists the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. It follows Aaron's line of priests down to Jehozadak, who went into captivity, and then the families of the three sons. It names the singers David set over the song in Yahweh's house: Heman, Asaph and Ethan. It ends with the cities and pasture lands that the Israelites gave the Levites out of the other tribes.

Who is speaking?

The narrator gives the lists. No one speaks in this chapter, and no verse is in gold. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

28The sons of Samuel: the firstborn, Joel, and the second, Abijah.

In plain English: The sons of Samuel: the firstborn, Joel (or: Vashni; see the note), the second, Abijah.

The Hebrew words: The Hebrew has "the sons of Samuel: the firstborn, Vashni, and Abijah". The name Joel is not in the Hebrew words here. The dictionary has Vashni as a name: "Vashni, an Israelite".

What changes: Read as a name, Samuel's firstborn is Vashni, and Abijah is the other son named. Read as the word "second", as this Bible does, the name of the firstborn is left out of the Hebrew and this Bible supplies Joel, with Abijah as the second. gives Samuel's firstborn as Joel and his second as Abijah, and names Joel as the father of Heman.

In plain English: To the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge: Hebron, Libnah with its pasture lands, Jattir, Eshtemoa with its pasture lands,

Good to know: This verse says "the cities of refuge" and then lists Hebron. says "Hebron with its pasture lands, the city of refuge for the man slayer". The lists of Joshua 21:13 to 18 and of verses 57 to 60 here overlap but are not the same: Joshua also names Ain, Juttah, Gibeon and Almon, and here Ashan and Allemeth appear. The text gives no reason for the differences.

In plain English: To the rest of the sons of Kohath they gave ten cities by lot, out of the family of the tribe, out of the half-tribe, the half of Manasseh (see the note).

Good to know: The Hebrew here is short and hard to read: "out of the family of the tribe, out of the half of the tribe, the half of Manasseh". It then says ten cities. gives these ten cities as out of Ephraim, Dan and the half-tribe of Manasseh. Here Ephraim is named in verse 66 and its cities are listed in verses 67 to 69, Dan is not named in this chapter, and the half-tribe of Manasseh has Aner and Bileam in verse 70.
