Genesis 5: The family line from Adam to Noah
A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
This chapter lists the family line from Adam to Noah: for each man, his age when his son was born, and how long he lived. Enoch's life ends differently from the others: he walks with God, and God takes him. The list ends with Noah and his three sons.
Who is speaking?
The narrator gives the list. Lamech speaks once, when he names his son Noah (verse 29). God does not speak in this chapter. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks
1This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, he made him in God’s likeness.
In plain English: This is the written record of Adam's family line. On the day God created man, he made him in God's likeness.
The Hebrew word: "Generations" is toledot, from the word for giving birth: a family line, or a family's story. Genesis opens new parts of the book with it: , here, , , , , and later ones.
How it is translated: In Genesis this Bible says "generations" in 12 of its 13 verses, usually as "the history of the generations of".

2He created them male and female, and blessed them. On the day they were created, he named them Adam.
In plain English: He created them male and female, and he blessed them. On the day they were created, he named them Adam (or: Mankind).
The Hebrew word: "Adam" here is adam, the ordinary word for a human being, or mankind. God gives this name to both of them, male and female: "he named them Adam".
What changes: Read as "mankind", God names the two of them "Human". The same word is the first man's own name () and the word for people in general.

24Enoch walked with God, and he was not found, for God took him.
In plain English: Enoch walked with God, and then he was gone (he was not found), because God took him.
Good to know: Eight times this chapter ends a man's life with "then he died". Enoch is different: "he was not found, for God took him". "Took" is the ordinary word for taking; it is also used when Yahweh takes Elijah away in .
Church tradition: Many churches teach that God took Enoch to heaven without his dying. says he was taken "so that he wouldn't see death". Genesis 5 says only that God took him.

In plain English: He named him Noah, saying, "This one will comfort us in our work and in the toil of our hands, caused by the ground that Yahweh has cursed."
