Numbers 29: The offerings of the seventh month
A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
Yahweh's list of offerings goes on with the three set times of the seventh month: the day of blowing on the first day, the day when the people afflict themselves on the tenth day, and the seven-day feast from the fifteenth day. Each day of the feast has its own number of bulls, from thirteen on the first day down to seven on the seventh, with rams, lambs, a goat, and meal and drink offerings, and the eighth day is a solemn assembly. Moses tells the Israelites everything Yahweh commanded.
Who is speaking?
Yahweh's speech to Moses from chapter 28 goes on and ends in verse 39. God's own words are in 39 of the 40 verses: verses 1 to 39. In verse 40 the narrator says that Moses told the Israelites all of it. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks
1“‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no regular work. It is a day of blowing of trumpets to you.God speaks
In plain English: "'In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you are to have a holy gathering. You must do no regular work. It is a day of blowing trumpets for you (literally: a day of a loud blast, or: of shouting).
The Hebrew word: "Blowing of trumpets" is teruah, which the dictionary gives as "clamor, i.e. acclamation of joy or a battle-cry; especially clangor of trumpets".
How it is translated: This Bible says a form of "shout" in 19 of its 33 verses and of "trumpet" in 15 (some verses use both).
What changes: The Hebrew has no word for "trumpets" in this verse: it says "a day of teruah". Read as "a day of shouting", the day is marked by a loud cry. calls it "a memorial of blowing of trumpets".
Church tradition: Jewish practice keeps this day as Rosh Hashanah, the new year, with the blowing of the ram's horn. Numbers 29 calls it only a day of blowing and gives its offerings.

The Hebrew words: "Afflict your souls" is anah nephesh. The dictionary gives anah as "to depress", to bring low. This Bible says a form of "afflict" in 43 of its 79 verses and of "humble" in 14.
What changes: Read as "humble yourselves", the day is one of bringing oneself low. Many readers take it to mean going without food. to and give the same rule for the tenth day of the seventh month, and calls it the day of atonement.
