Numbers 26: The second count of Israel

A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study

What happens?

After the plague, Yahweh tells Moses and Eleazar the priest to count the men of Israel from twenty years old and up, tribe by tribe and family by family, in the plains of Moab. Yahweh says the land is to be shared out by lot, with a larger share for a larger group, and the Levites are counted on their own. Not one man counted at Sinai is left, except Caleb and Joshua, as Yahweh had said.

Who is speaking?

The narrator gives the list. God's own words are in 6 of the 65 verses: his command to count the people in verse 2, his rules for sharing out the land in verses 53 to 56, and what he had said about the wilderness in verse 65. In verse 4 Moses and Eleazar are passing on the command to the people, so it is not in gold. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

1After the plague, Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying,

In plain English: After the plague, Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saying,

Good to know: In Hebrew Bibles the words "After the plague" are the last verse of chapter 25 (25:19), and chapter 26 begins at "Yahweh spoke". The words are the same; only the numbers differ. The plague is the one at Peor, in .

2“Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all who are able to go out to war in Israel.”God speaks

In plain English: "Take a count (literally: lift up the head) of the whole community of Israel, from twenty years old and up, by their fathers' houses: every man in Israel able to go to war."

Good to know: This is the second count in Numbers. The first was at Sinai, in and , with the same words "from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war".

In plain English: The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, when the fire burned up 250 men. They became a sign (or: a warning).

The Hebrew word: "Sign" is nes, which the dictionary gives as "a flag", "a signal", and "a token". It is the same word as the pole of the bronze serpent in and .

Good to know: The story is told in chapter 16: the earth swallows Dathan and Abiram (), and fire burns up the 250 men who offered incense ().
