Numbers 7: The leaders' gifts for the altar

A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study

What happens?

On the day the tabernacle is set up and anointed, the twelve leaders of Israel bring six covered wagons and twelve oxen, and Moses gives them to the Levites for their work. Then, one leader on each of twelve days, they bring the same gift for the dedication of the altar: a silver platter and bowl full of flour, a gold ladle full of incense, and animals for the offerings. When Moses goes into the Tent of Meeting, he hears the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat.

Who is speaking?

The narrator tells the story. God's own words are in 2 of the 89 verses: what he tells Moses about the wagons in verse 5, and about the leaders' days in verse 11. In verse 89 the text says Moses heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat, but it does not give the words. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

1On the day that Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle, and had anointed it and sanctified it with all its furniture, and the altar with all its vessels, and had anointed and sanctified them;

In plain English: On the day Moses finished setting up the tabernacle, and had anointed it and made it holy with all its furnishings, and the altar with all its utensils, anointing them and making them holy,

Good to know: says the tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month of the second year. begins on the first day of the second month. If this is the same day, it comes before the events of chapter 1. The text does not explain the order.

89When Moses went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with Yahweh, he heard his voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the Testimony, from between the two cherubim; and he spoke to him.

In plain English: When Moses went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with Yahweh (literally: with him), he heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat (or: the cover) on the ark of the Testimony, from between the two cherubim. And he (the voice) spoke to him (or: and Moses spoke to him).

The Hebrew word: "Mercy seat" is kapporet, which the dictionary gives as "a lid (used only of the cover of the sacred Ark)". It comes from kaphar, the word for making atonement, which the dictionary gives as "to cover", and also "to expiate".

How it is translated: This Bible says "mercy seat" in all 22 verses that use kapporet.

What changes: Read as "mercy seat", the name speaks of mercy. Read as "cover" (or: atonement cover), it names the lid of the ark, the place linked with atonement.

Good to know: In Yahweh says he will meet with Moses and tell him "from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim". The Hebrew of the last words here, "and he spoke to him", does not name who spoke: it can be the voice speaking to Moses, or Moses speaking to Yahweh.
