1 Chronicles 27: The monthly divisions, the tribal leaders and the king's officers
A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
The chapter lists the men who served the king: twelve divisions of twenty-four thousand, each on duty for one month of the year, with a captain over each; then the leaders of the tribes of Israel. David did not count those twenty years old and under, and Joab began a census but did not finish it, and wrath came on Israel for this. The chapter ends with the men over the king's storehouses, fields, vineyards and herds, and the king's counselors and commander.
Who is speaking?
The narrator tells the story. No verse is in gold: no one speaks in this chapter. In verse 23 the narrator says that Yahweh had said he would make Israel many, like the stars of the sky; those are the narrator's words about what Yahweh had said, with no quotation marks, so they are not in gold. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks
1Now the children of Israel after their number, the heads of fathers’ households and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers who served the king in any matter of the divisions which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year—of every division were twenty-four thousand.
In plain English: Now the sons of Israel, by their number: the heads of the fathers' households, the captains of thousands and hundreds, and their officers who served the king in every matter of the divisions that came in and went out month by month through all the months of the year. Each division was twenty-four thousand.
