Exodus 39: The priests' garments, and all the work finished

A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study

What happens?

The garments are made: the ephod, the breastplate with twelve stones, the blue robe with bells and pomegranates, the tunics, turban, sash and pants, and the gold plate engraved HOLY TO YAHWEH. Again and again the text says it was done as Yahweh commanded Moses. The Israelites bring all the finished work to Moses, he sees that it is done as Yahweh commanded, and he blesses them.

Who is speaking?

The narrator tells the whole chapter. The only quoted words are the inscription on the gold plate in verse 30, HOLY TO YAHWEH. They are written words, not a speech, and they are not in gold. Each "as Yahweh commanded Moses" is the narrator saying what was done, not Yahweh speaking. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

1Of the blue, purple, and scarlet, they made finely worked garments for ministering in the holy place, and made the holy garments for Aaron, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

In plain English: From the blue, purple, and scarlet they made finely worked garments for serving in the holy place, and made the holy garments for Aaron, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

Good to know: The words "as Yahweh commanded Moses", or very close to them, are in 19 verses from to : in 38:22, seven times for the garments (39:1 to 39:31), in 39:32, 39:42 and 39:43, and eight times in chapter 40, from 40:16 to 40:32.

The Hebrew word: "Wires" is pathil, which the dictionary gives as "twine". In Exodus the word is in 5 verses, and this Bible says "lace" in the other 4: , , and .

Good to know: says the ephod is made of gold, blue, purple, scarlet and fine twisted linen, and does not say how the gold is worked in. This verse does.

The Hebrew words: The text names the twelve stones and does not describe them. The dictionary gives the Hebrew name of 11 of the 12 with "perhaps", "probably" or "supposed", and gives the other, odem ("ruby" here), as "the ruby, garnet, or some other red gem". For 5 of the 12 its guess is a different stone from this Bible's. For example, it gives bareqeth ("beryl" in this verse) as "perhaps the emerald", and yahalom ("emerald" in ) as "probably onyx". The same twelve stones are named in to .

42According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did all the work.

In plain English: The Israelites did all the work according to everything that Yahweh commanded Moses.

43Moses saw all the work, and behold, they had done it as Yahweh had commanded. They had done so; and Moses blessed them.

In plain English: Moses saw all the work, and look, they had done it as Yahweh had commanded. They had done so, and Moses blessed them.

Good to know: Several words here are ones that Genesis uses when God finishes creation. "Saw" and "behold" are in ("God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good"), and "blessed" is in . The same verb for "finished" is in , in ("Moses finished the work") and in ("God finished his work"). These are common words: the Hebrew verb behind "saw" is in more than 1,200 verses of the Bible.

Church tradition: Some Jewish and Christian readers see the finishing of the tabernacle as an echo of the finishing of creation. Exodus does not say so.
