Deuteronomy 34: Moses sees the land and dies

A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study

What happens?

Moses goes up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, and Yahweh shows him the whole land and tells him this is the land he swore to give to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but that Moses will not go over into it. Moses dies there in the land of Moab, at 120 years old, his eyes still clear, and he is buried in a valley, and no one knows where his grave is. Israel weeps for him thirty days, Joshua leads them, and the text says no prophet has arisen in Israel like Moses, whom Yahweh knew face to face.

Who is speaking?

The narrator tells the story. God's own words are in 1 of the 12 verses: Yahweh speaks to Moses in verse 4, and in it he gives his own words of the oath he swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

6He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth Peor, but no man knows where his tomb is to this day.

In plain English: He buried him (or: someone buried him; see the note) in the valley in the land of Moab, across from Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is.

The Hebrew word: "He buried" is qavar, which the dictionary gives as "to inter". The Hebrew says only "he buried him" and does not name who "he" is.

What changes: Read with "he" as Yahweh, the last one named in , Yahweh himself buried Moses. Read as "one buried him", the verse simply says Moses was buried, without saying by whom. The old Greek translation says "they buried him". tells of Michael the archangel arguing with the devil "about the body of Moses".
