Exodus 30: The altar of incense, the census money, the basin, the oil and the incense
A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
Yahweh gives the plan for the altar of incense and says Aaron is to burn incense on it every morning and evening. He tells Moses that when the people are counted, each man twenty years old or more is to give half a shekel as a ransom for his life, and that a bronze basin is to be made for Aaron and his sons to wash in. He then gives the recipes for the holy anointing oil and the incense, and says that no one is to make anything like them.
Who is speaking?
The narrator speaks in verses 11, 17 and 22, and in the first words of verse 34, each time to introduce a new speech of Yahweh to Moses. God's own words are in 35 of the 38 verses: the end of the speech that began in Exodus 25:2 (verses 1 to 10), and then his words about the census (verses 12 to 16), the basin (18 to 21), the anointing oil (23 to 33) and the incense (34 to 38). In verses 31 to 33 Yahweh tells Moses what to say to the Israelites about the oil, so those words are his too. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks
1“You shall make an altar to burn incense on. You shall make it of acacia wood.God speaks

Good to know: The verse does not say why counting the people could bring a plague. The only other verse in Exodus that uses negeph is : "no plague will be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt."
