Leviticus 20: The penalties, and a people set apart
A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
Yahweh gives the penalties for the wrongs forbidden in chapters 18 and 19: giving children to Molech, turning to mediums, cursing father or mother, adultery, and the forbidden sexual relations. Many carry the death penalty, others being cut off or dying childless. Yahweh tells Israel to be holy, to keep the difference between clean and unclean animals, and to remember that he has set them apart from the peoples to be his own.
Who is speaking?
Yahweh speaks to Moses in 26 of the 27 verses: all of it is his message for Israel. Verse 1 is the narrator, so it is not in gold. In verse 24 Yahweh repeats a promise he has made before. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks
