Leviticus 27: Vows, things given to Yahweh, and the tithe

A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study

What happens?

Yahweh tells Moses how to value a person, an animal, a house or a field that someone vows or gives to Yahweh, with set prices in silver shekels, and how much extra (a fifth) must be added to buy it back. Firstborn animals already belong to Yahweh, and things devoted to him can never be sold or bought back. A tenth of the crops, the fruit, and the herds and flocks is holy to Yahweh.

Who is speaking?

Yahweh speaks to Moses. God's own words are in 32 of the 34 verses: verses 2 to 33, which verse 1 introduces. Verse 34, the last verse of Leviticus, is the narrator. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

1Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

In plain English: Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘When a man consecrates a person to Yahweh in a vow, according to your valuation,God speaks

In plain English: "Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When a man makes a special vow (or: fulfills a vow) to give a person to Yahweh, by the value you set,

The Hebrew word: "Consecrates... in a vow" is the verb pala with the word for a vow. The dictionary gives pala as "perhaps to separate, i.e. distinguish", and from that, to be great, difficult or wonderful.

How it is translated: In its 69 verses this Bible most often says "wonder" (21) or "marvel" (20). With a vow it is in 5 verses: this one, , and ("to accomplish a vow"), and ("make a special vow").

What changes: Read as "makes a special vow", it is an unusual vow, set apart from others. Read as "fulfills a vow", the man is paying what he has already vowed.

In plain English: the value you set for a male from twenty to sixty years old is to be fifty shekels of silver, by the shekel of the sanctuary.

Good to know: The amounts in verses 3 to 7 are set by age and by whether the person is male or female. The text does not give a reason for them. says the shekel of the sanctuary is twenty gerahs, as does.
