Numbers 4: The work of the Levite clans
A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
Yahweh tells Moses and Aaron to count the men of the three Levite clans from thirty to fifty years old, and gives each clan its work when the camp moves. Aaron and his sons wrap the ark and the other holy things first, and the Kohathites then carry them without touching them, so that they do not die. The Gershonites carry the curtains and coverings, and the Merarites the frames, bars, pillars and bases, and the text gives the number of working men in each clan and in all.
Who is speaking?
Yahweh speaks three times: to Moses and Aaron in verses 1 and 17, and to Moses in verse 21. God's own words are in 30 of the 49 verses: verses 2 to 16, 18 to 20, and 22 to 33. Verses 34 to 49 are the narrator, who gives the counts and says that they were made as Yahweh commanded. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

In plain English: They are to put a covering of sealskin (or: leather) over it, spread a cloth all of blue over that, and put its poles in place.
The Hebrew words: "Sealskin" is tachash. The dictionary gives it as "a (clean) animal with fur, probably a species of antelope". "Blue" is tekhelet, which the dictionary gives as a color "(violet)" made from a sea mussel.
How it is translated: This Bible says "sealskin" in 7 of the 14 verses that use tachash, all in this chapter, "sea cow hides" in 6 verses of Exodus, and "leather" once, for sandals (). It says "blue" in all 49 verses that use tekhelet.
What changes: No one is sure what animal tachash was. Either way, the verse speaks of a covering made of skin.

20but they shall not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die.”God speaks
In plain English: But the Kohathites must not go in to look at the holy things even for a moment (or: while they are being covered), or they will die."
The Hebrew word: "For a moment" is literally "as a swallowing", from bala, which the dictionary gives as "to make away with (specifically by swallowing)".
How it is translated: This Bible says "swallow" or a longer form in 35 of the 48 verses that use bala, and "moment" only here.
What changes: Read as "for the time it takes to swallow", the Kohathites must not look at the holy things even for an instant. Read as "while they are being swallowed up", that is, wrapped and covered, they must not look while Aaron and his sons cover them (). Both readings keep them from seeing the holy things.
