Numbers 9: A second Passover, and the cloud over the tabernacle
A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
In the wilderness of Sinai, Yahweh tells Moses that Israel is to keep the Passover, and they keep it. Some men are unclean because of a dead body and cannot keep it, so Yahweh gives a rule: anyone unclean or far away may keep it a month later. Then the text tells how the cloud covered the tabernacle, looking like fire at night, and how the people set out and camped only when the cloud moved or stayed.
Who is speaking?
The narrator tells the story. God's own words are in 7 of the 23 verses: his command about the Passover in verses 2 and 3, and his rule for the second Passover in verses 10 to 14. The unclean men speak to Moses in verse 7, and Moses answers them in verse 8. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

In plain English: But there were some men who were unclean because of a dead body (literally: the soul of a person), so they could not keep the Passover on that day. That same day they came to Moses and Aaron.
The Hebrew word: "Dead body" here is nephesh, the word usually given as "soul". The dictionary gives it as "properly, a breathing creature".
How it is translated: In Numbers this Bible says "soul" or "souls" in 24 of the 44 verses that use nephesh, and "dead" in 8, all for touching or being near a dead person, as here.
