2 Chronicles 29: Hezekiah cleanses the house of Yahweh
A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
Hezekiah becomes king at twenty-five and in the first month of his first year opens the doors of Yahweh's house and repairs them. He tells the Levites to sanctify themselves and carry the filthiness out of the holy place, and they finish cleansing it on the sixteenth day of the first month. Then the king and the officials bring sin offerings and burnt offerings, the singing and the instruments begin, and the whole assembly bows and worships, and the people bring so many burnt offerings that the Levites have to help the priests.
Who is speaking?
The narrator tells the story. No verse is in gold: God speaks no words of his own in this chapter. Hezekiah speaks to the Levites in verses 5 to 11 (verse 5 begins his speech and verse 11 ends it); in it he says that their fathers were unfaithful and that Yahweh's wrath was on Judah and Jerusalem, so those are his words about what Yahweh did, not God's own words. In verses 18 and 19 the men who cleansed the house report to Hezekiah that it is cleansed. In verse 31 Hezekiah speaks again and tells the people to come near and bring sacrifices. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks
1Hezekiah began to reign when he was twenty-five years old, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.
In plain English: Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.
Good to know: gives the same age and the same twenty-nine years in Jerusalem, and says his mother's name was "Abi the daughter of Zechariah". This verse says Abijah. The text does not explain the two forms of the name.

8Therefore Yahweh’s wrath was on Judah and Jerusalem, and he has delivered them to be tossed back and forth, to be an astonishment and a hissing, as you see with your eyes.
In plain English: So the wrath of Yahweh was on Judah and Jerusalem, and he has made them something to be tossed back and forth (or: a terror), a horror and a hissing, as you see with your own eyes.
The Hebrew word: "Tossed back and forth" is zevaah, which the dictionary gives as "agitation, fear". The word-by-word meaning given for it in this verse is "a terror", listed under the related entry zaavah, which the dictionary gives as "agitation, maltreatment". The next two words are "a horror" and "a hissing".
How it is translated: This Bible says "tossed" for this word in 5 of the 6 verses that use it.
What changes: Read as "tossed back and forth", Yahweh has made them something that is shaken about. Read as "a terror", he has made them something that frightens those who see it. The text does not say which.
