Joshua 8: Ai is taken, and the law is read at Mount Ebal
A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study
What happens?
Yahweh tells Joshua not to be afraid and to go up against Ai again, and this time Israel may keep the plunder and the livestock. Joshua hides an ambush behind the city, draws the men of Ai out by pretending to run, and at Yahweh's word holds out his javelin; the ambush takes the city and sets it on fire. All the people of Ai are killed, twelve thousand men and women, and the king of Ai is hanged on a tree, and his body is thrown down at the city gate under a great heap of stones. Then Joshua builds an altar of uncut stones on Mount Ebal, writes a copy of the law of Moses on the stones, and reads all of it to the whole assembly of Israel.
Who is speaking?
The narrator tells the story. God's own words are in 3 of the 35 verses: Yahweh's words to Joshua in verses 1 and 2, and his command about the javelin in verse 18. Joshua gives his orders to the men of the ambush in verses 4 to 8, and in verse 6 he gives the words the men of Ai will say. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks
