Exodus 5: Pharaoh makes the work harder

A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study

What happens?

Moses and Aaron ask Pharaoh to let the people go and hold a feast to Yahweh in the wilderness. Pharaoh refuses, and orders the people to make the same number of bricks without being given straw. The Israelite officers are beaten, and they blame Moses and Aaron, and Moses complains to Yahweh.

Who is speaking?

The narrator tells the story. Pharaoh, the taskmasters, the Israelite officers, Moses and Aaron all speak. In verse 1 Moses and Aaron are repeating Yahweh's words to Pharaoh, so they are not in gold. Yahweh himself does not speak in this chapter. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

1Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”

In plain English: Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go, so that they can hold a feast to me in the wilderness.'"
