Genesis 41: Pharaoh's dreams, and Joseph put in charge of Egypt

A free study, verse by verse. Text: World English Bible. Notes come from the Hebrew. How to read a study

What happens?

Pharaoh has two dreams that no one in Egypt can explain, and the cupbearer at last remembers Joseph. Joseph tells Pharaoh that God is showing him seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine, and advises him to store up food. Pharaoh puts Joseph in charge of all Egypt and gives him an Egyptian name and a wife, and Joseph has two sons before the famine comes.

Who is speaking?

The narrator tells the story. Pharaoh, the cupbearer and Joseph speak. God does not speak in this chapter. Joseph says that God will answer Pharaoh (verse 16) and that God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do (verses 25, 28 and 32), but those are Joseph's words, not God's. God's own words are printed in gold, and those verses are marked God speaks

1At the end of two full years, Pharaoh dreamed, and behold, he stood by the river.

In plain English: Two full years later, Pharaoh had a dream: he was standing by the river (the Nile).

In plain English: You will be in charge of my house, and all my people will obey your word (or: will kiss, in honor, at your word). Only on the throne will I be greater than you."

The Hebrew word: "Will be ruled" is yishaq, from nashaq, the usual word for "kiss". Word for word, the line reads: "at your mouth all my people will kiss".

How it is translated: In 29 of its 35 verses this Bible says "kiss", "kissed" or "kisses". In 3 it says "armed".

What changes: Read as "kiss", the people show honor to Joseph's word. Read as "be ruled", they follow his orders. Either way, all the people come under Joseph.

Good to know: Pharaoh gives Joseph a new, Egyptian name, Zaphenath-paneah. The text does not say what it means, and this is the only verse that uses it. Asenath's father, Potiphera, has a name close to Potiphar, Joseph's first master (), but the two names are spelled differently in Hebrew, and the text does not say they are the same man.
